theresa's training

Theresa’s training consists of - you guessed it - a lot of running!  But she’s not alone in her training.  Her key coach is none other than Ray Zahab, winner of the world’s most difficult and challenging ultra-distance foot races, who is likely most famous for his trek across the Sahara Desert.  Through our connections at GoodLife, where Ray appeared as a key note speaker at the Canadian Fitness Conference, Ray provides Theresa with weekly “check-ins” and training guides.  Check him out at www.rayzahab.com.

As well, Theresa is working closely with Pam Colby who has practiced as a Registered Dietician and works in the London hospitals in the Department of Medicine, Endocrinology and Metabolism for over 30 years.

Food is the fuel that will power Theresa's ultra-distance run. Pam will help Theresa build on her firm foundation of choosing nutritious foods before, during and after every workout. Achieving adequate total energy intake to keep up with the increasing demands of her training will be an enormous challenge - not to mention her actual run!  Follow along as Theresa learns to eat more things than she ever thought possible - but don't necessarily join in the munching unless you are running along with her in training!

About Pam
As a Certified Diabetes Educator, Pam works with people with diabetes, prediabetes and lipid (blood fat) abnormalities.  Pam is passionate about helping her clients attain their fitness goals.  Present and past additional roles include teaching fitness classes at Goodlife Fitness Clubs, being a guest lecturer at Brescia University College and an official Judge with Rowing Canada Aviron.  Pam is the mother of two active adult daughters, Adrienne and Shauna.  Favourite vacations are spent cycling in exotic locations, with husband, Peter and friends.

Of course, those miles take their toll on Theresa’s body.  Luckily, Brad Arndt, Registered Massage Therapist, is on the team to give Theresa regular massages to help restore precious muscle tissue and provides great coaching as well.  Brad is a Triathalete who has lots of experience in endurance and distant running, most notably completing the Iron Man in Hawaii in 2005.

About Brad

Brad Arndt has been a RMT for 15 years, working with athletes of all levels.  He has worked with the Canadian Women's Olympic rowing team since 1997, and has worked with Olympic gold medallists, world champions, NHL and OHL players, national level runners, triathletes, soccer players, and volleyball players.  He is a service provider through the Canadian Sports Centre, providing massage therapy to elite Canadian athletes.  Like Theresa, Brad has a busy, athletic family and participates actively in their lives, supporting and encouraging their activities, hoping that they will continue with a healthy lifestyle.

Brad will be providing Theresa with regular massage therapy treatments during her build-up to the big day.  He might be able to offer some helpful hints regarding her training and preparation, as he has experience in numerous endurance events, including 8 Ironman triathlons, numerous marathons and ultra marathons.  He participated in 4 Triathlon World Championships, including the 2004 Hawaii Ironman.

Massage therapy is an important factor with any training program.   Regular massages help muscles recover from the stress of long runs, restoring muscles to a healthy state, which means more high quality training and less down time with injury.  Massage therapy can be very effective in preventing injury, by releasing undue tension in muscles before it causes injury.  Providing the athlete with applicable stretches, strengthening exercises, and postural reminders all help with performance.

Stay tuned for diet and massage/stretch tips from both Brad and Pam!
